To me, pure nonfiction is documented, researchable facts, not personal reflections, as seen through someone's eyes. For a memoir to be based on truth, I believe the bone structure of the story, to the best of the memoirist's recollection, should remain intact and not embellished upon, which in my case is the horrific, often twisted, childhood abuse I endured at the hands of my disturbed mother. Due to my young age when much of this took place, my recreations of conversations and insignificant events may be imperfect, but the day-to-day torment I suffered during these early years is etched into my memory in vivid detail. This raw, soul-baring account of what I remember is what I offer the reader in Call Me Tuesday.
Nevertheless, readers are understandably confused by all this, as evident in this interesting blog review:

So, the sequel to CMT (projected to be released in late spring or early summer of this year), in which my true experiences are diligently rendered as I recall them, will be classified simply, as a memoir.
Hi - I just came across your book today, and read it in a matter of hours. While a heartbreaking read, it is nice to know that you are triumphing over your childhood. Is there a chance that your book will be published for the Barnes and Noble Nook? I would love to be able to recommend the book to my sister-in-law and nieces, and we all have nooks. Thank you for telling your story. I look forward to reading the sequel.

Hi Tara! Thank you for your interest in my book and for reaching out to me with your kind thoughts! Presently, Call Me Tuesday is in a Kindle program through Amazon and part of the agreement is that for three months the ebook version must remain exclusively through them. It has been available to Nook readers before, and the paperback version is still listed with Barnes and Noble. When my three month contract is up in May, I will problably give B&N a try again. In the meantime, maybe there is a free app available either through Nook or Kindle that would enable your family to read it on their Nook. I have a Nexus tablet and have dowloaded both the Nook and Kindle Apps.I found an interesting link for you that may help solve your problem: http://www.geek.com/articles/gadgets/kindle-app-works-on-rooted-nook-for-ultimate-ebook-reader-20110615/
DeleteAgain, thank you so much for contacting me and also for recommending my book to your loved ones. Take care!--Leigh
I haven't read your book yet but was the same as face behind the mask? I got face behind the mask from my aunt mentioned in the front of the book.
ReplyDeleteHi! Thank you for your interest in my writing! The book you are referring to is no longer in print due to editing issues. "Call Me Tuesday" is an edited, greatly expanded version of that title.
DeleteIs your aunt by any chance named Paula?
Thanks for stopping by!
Yes Paula is my Aunt, Gary is my stepdads brother. I really enjoyed your book, I'm really sorry you had to go through all that, I cried for you....I will be getting your book "Call me Tuesday".....Its amazing what you've been through and are here today your a strong woman.

I grew up in southern Illinois, only an hour from terre haute, Indiana, so your books hit home with me. I remember going to Sullivan several times as a teen. The town I grew up in was Robinson, Illinois. Population about 3,000.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your books very much, despite their dark nature. I've always had a very strong interest in child abuse. (Not sure why). Your story was heartbreaking. I would really like to see more photographs of your family if possible, it would create a better image in my mind. Do you plan to write any more memoirs or books in the future?
Thanks!
Keri
I forgot to mention, I was born in 1972 in Olney, Illinois.
ReplyDeleteHi Keri! I'm so glad you enjoyed reading my books! Thank you for letting me know--the opinions of my readers mean so much to me.
ReplyDeleteYou don't live far from me! I can see why you could identify with the Midwest culture of the second book. Thanks for contacting me. Maybe we could connect on Facebook, as well! Look me up!
As far as pictures go, I'm sad to say there are not many pictures of me as a child, and I don't have many pics of the rest of my family either. As for pics of my life you read about in the second book, I do have those, but I would need to scan them and get them on my computer in order to share. I'll see what I can do.
Yes, I am working on my third book, but no more memoirs. From now on, I want to look forward instead of back. My current project is a love story, with a touch of suspense and mystery, entitled, "Falling Balloons," and should be released early next year. I will post on my blog and FB page when it's in the final stages.
Again, Keri, thanks for getting in touch, and also for your interest in my books!
I loved your book. I'm sad you had to go through the torture! I was appalled at the fact that your family members did nothing! I cried through out the whole book! I am also glad you got through everything and now you are so strong! I'm about to read your next book! I would love to know if you still talk to your brothers?
ReplyDeleteHello friend! Thank you for posting, and thanks too, for letting me know you enjoyed "Call Me Tuesday." In answer to your question, I only talk to one of my brothers, the youngest. My middle brother, sadly, committed suicide a few years ago, and the oldest lives in another country, having estranged himself from all of the family years ago.
DeleteThank you for your interest and I wish you the best!
